I started with a dark blue and black backgroundlayer. After that i brought the brownish, rockish formation just below the horizontal line to have the oyster and pearl centered on the canvas. 

The layers of colors with the white highlights made the oyster rough, texturized. Whereas the pearl needed to be smooth, highlighted, like you’re almost able to grab it from the canvas.
